I need some help. I run my carb dry after each riding trip. This weekend I pullled the bike out and it would not start. I traced the problem to no fuel. I had fuel at the pump intake (from tank), I had vacuum at the pump, but no fuel out when cranking. After cranking for a while, I finally got the bike running and it ran fine all day. Question is running the carb dry damaging the diaphrams on the pump? Any other ideas?

Just curious as to why you run the carb out of gas after each ride? I was always taught to shut the gas off and that was enough. I would be concerned about damage to the diaphrams (drying out & cracking). If I let my ride sit for any lenght of time I do run the carb dry and add stabil.Just curious.

Mine is usually a bugger to start when I run out of gas. I usually have to use the choke(even on a hot engine), and feather the throttle.

Very weird that my 500 is more consuming than my buddy's raptor.

I too wonder why you are running your carb dry after each ride?? That doesn't make sense to me. I agree with the other post that said they are a bugger to start when being run dry....you have to choke the snot out of them even with a hot engine.

What problems do you anticipate by not running it dry?

Just habit I guess. Sometimes it is a long time between rides. I figured it would be better to have the carb dry instead of full of old gas that could possibly clog mor gum.

It still dosent explain why the problem has just appeared. I have done this for two years and have never had a problem starting it.

Possibly a stuck check valve or diaphragm in the pump. I assume you have the little vacuum fuel pump. My friend has a 425 Mag with it. The most sure cure is to put a priming bulb (like they use in some snowmobiles) in-line BEFORE the pump, and it will always start right up after being run dry. Just give it a few pumps to fill the carb bowl.
