How big of a mistake is it to purchase a used Sportsman 335? I assume that atv was not a big hit which is why they discontinued it after only two years. However, since I am in the market for a used sportsman, I have noticed a few good deals on the 335's so decided to at least consider one. I have a honda fourtrax 300 and kaw bayou 300 and find them to be fast enough and powerful enough for my liking. However, they weigh 500lbs vs. 700.

Any comments from someone who has ridden both or can make the comparison to my 300's?

If you like putt, putt around the 335 would be fine. But... it has smaller tires, no ebs, no power. If you ride with other guys Sportsman 500 models you will quickly develop an inferiority complex.

If you ride by yourself and ride slow it would be fine.

To add to what Thor said, you will be getting the legendary Sportsman ride, and the ability to go 99% of the places any other Sportsman would, but you will feel like you are doing so at about half speed.
As far as durability, I think they held up well, but were slooooooowwwwww.

find a used scrambler 400, the 95's and 96's are not bad, as long as THEY ARE NOT BUILT ON MONDAY OR FRIDAY i think mine was built on a wensday, no problems that wherent done to it (bent front rims, gotta put new breaks on it, and a new lightbulb)
and if you do ride with sp500's, as i do, they will be like "your quad is friggen fast!" i will admit, the ride is no where as nice as the sportsman, but it is alot more durable, and the rear axel on those things are FAT! they arent breaking unless you smack into somthing backwards at 50 mph, then they might dent,
the gas charged shocks are a delight when you go off jumps, or down rock/stump/root steps,
and they wheelie like a mudda fukka, tons of power to,
keep her revved, and she has no weakness
