went to a artic cat dealer that is close by instead of to the polaris dealer to get oil.they had amsoil 20w-50 they said they put in the cats. Their mechanic was a former polaris mechanic. He said to run the 20w-50 in the 500 all summer and winter, no problem. What do you guys think? I did an oil change and used the amsoil. I'm wonderin if I should of went with a lighter oil...........mobil 1 10w-40,5w-40?

I think the owner's manual calls for 0W-40, so that's what I would use, especially if it is still under warranty. 20W-50 is not recommended for cold climate conditions.

nightowl,

You should be fine running 20W-50, except in extremely cold temps, especially since it is a synthetic. I'm sure that several people probably run that oil in their bikes, and if it caused problems, it would've surfaced already.

Why not Amsoil Series 2000 0W-30 Synthetic. That's what I use.

I use 10w30 Penzzoil full synthetic. According to the owners manual (page 61)you can use any API certified "SH" oil.

It’s going to be a devil for starting in sub-freezing temperatures! The 5W 40 would have been a more appropriate alternate.

I went with the 20w-50 because thats what the mechanic said to use. They had 10w-40 and I was going to get that but he said to use the 20w-50.I was tryin to save time and money,I should of just went the extra 15 miles to the polaris dealer. Next time I will.

As far as I'm concerned AMSOIL is the best oil out there. However if they quit making it I would then run Mobil 1. About 6 years ago I became friends with a log truck operator who has both a drag car and a mud racer. He claimed it was used from bumper to bumper in every machine he owned and it was the best. I ran Mobil 1 at the time in my street car and loved it. Within the 4 years following I saw his drain intervals compared to mine, oil condition, and overall cleaness of the engine. Now, I'm a dealer for it and use it in everything. Any oil company that can make a 2-stroke oil that runs 100 to 1 or 35,000 mile (or 1 year) oil change is doing something right!
