Best Clutch Kit for Explorer 400??
#1
Well, I have a 99 xplor 400, and I know that this has somewhat been a topic before. I was wonering what clutch kit would be the best, I Know theres a group of different brands, like hot seatt which was the new one everyone had to have so how is it? Pros and Cons? Same for the EPI? And last HPD? I also forgot to tell you, I have a HPD Trail Pipe if that matters? Thanks for all your help.

Best for what?
I am no expert in clutch kits by any means, but you DO need to know what you want your machine to do. Do you want pulling power, acceleration, top speed, quicker backshifting? There is no one clutch kit that does all of these 'best'.
What you need to do is figure out what type of riding you want the clutch to perform best at (trail riding, drag racing, top speed or whatever). Also, list any accessories you have added that could add weight or affect performance (larger/more aggressive tires, winch, if you routinely haul a passenger), as well as the state of tune your engine is in (stock, ported, aftermarket pipe).
Now call someone like Rick Ritter, HPD, or HighLifter with all this info, and they will steer you in the right direction.
For what it is worth, I have dealt with Rick a few times, and he is VERY good to work with, and HPD has a reputation for building parts that are tougher than stock. Have heard good things about HighLifter, but don't actually have any personal experience with their products.
Try rittercycle.com or hpd.com or highlifter.com
I am sure there are more out there, but these are the ones I know personally.

Well, I want to have my low end better because the pipe will take some of that away.
Heres WHat I Have
Titan 589's (25's)
Warn 2,000Lb
K&N Air
Air Box Mod
HPD Trail Pipe
So I would like some more low end for wheelies and trail riding.

If all you are looking for is better acceleration for wheelies, and the ability to better turn those 589s and want something economical, try just changing your primary clutch spring to the green one. If it was all stock, I would recommend going with the white, like I did, but with your heavier tires, and wanting to wheelie with a winch, I would go with the green. It isn't the same as an entire clutch kit, but it costs only $15-$20, and takes about an hour for you to do yourself with hand tools.
Just pop off the outer cover from the front pulley (7 bolts) swap out the spring, and tighten it back up. Just remember the 6 outer bolts tighten into aluminum, so don't overdo those.
Try it, you might like it. If you race a lot, a full clutch kit might give better performance, but I can think of nothing that costs under $20 that does as much good.

Ditto on what farmer said on the green spring but i would put a blue Aaen secondary spring in too,set at 2 and 2.That is the set up i have on my 96 400 Sportsman and it will wheelie in low pulling a winch and GBC Gators. The blue spring will help on slowing down on hills.------Brad --96 425 magnum-white drive spring, blue secondary spring,K&N filter,ChinChen Jackals--------96 400 Sportsman greenspring, blue spring,GBC gators

You might want to consider lighter weights. When I put a trail pipe on my Sport, I went to a stiffer spring and lighter weights. That moved everything to higher RPM's where the engine has it's power now. Makes it run in it's power band pretty much all the time. But the other guys are right, unless you want to spend a lot of time and money on trial and error testing, call an expert.
