Last week while riding my Scrambler engine started to run funny. It would idle very high and got louder all the time. I looked at it and seen that the lower gasket between the cylinder and the crankcase was blown. Exhaust and oil was coming out of the engine.

I wanted to stop riding but I was having too much fun. If it blows...I will rebuild it with a Wiseco piston I told myself. So I rode for serveral more hours. The whole time a figured it was running very lean-thus the fast idle speed. By the end of the day it would not idle anymore, you had to keep it moving or it would die.

I took the engine apart that night. It took only 2 hours. When I got down to the piston there sat a .020 Wiseco piston with NO damage. I was pretty happy about that. I put it back together with new gaskets and everything went fine.

But now it just sits in the shed. I am waiting for the HPD Nickel Trail pipe and clutch kit that I ordered. With my K&N filter/air box mod and Power Reeds I should have a pretty powerful machine. I was pretty happy with my RCR Stage 1 Kit, but now I am ready for some HPD goodies!

How well will my RCR alum. muffler fit/work on the HPD pipe?

'96 Scrambler w/K&N filter, Boyesen Power Reeds, and HPD pipe and clutck kit coming soon.

I heard the good new's from Lester Lion. By the way I've started to work on destroying the Wrangler Sport's in the shed so as to get some new rubber on by spring. Well give me a buzz if you plan on going out riding anytime soon.

I will post my results when I get the pipe/clutch kit on and go for a spin just in case someone is thinking about getting the same thing. Sounds like "most" everyone here on the forum likes their HPD pipe. I am pretty sure I will too.

Those 400 engines are built pretty good. Add a Wiseco, and they are TOUGH!
Glad nothing was hurt.

I made the same switch when I had my Sport. You will be happy with your decision.

A minor leak may cause a lean idle but won't signifigantly change the mixture at WOT. It takes a clogged carb or whacky jetting to cause a "lean under power" condition to melt pistons- that condition is slightly easier cause on alchy motor's IMO. Good luck on that motor

Farmr123,

Your report on your Wiseco piston install story helped me out a lot on mine, only difference was is that I already had the Wiseco piston and did not know it. Whoever owned it before me must have melted the stock piston, bored the cylinder, and put in a .020 Wiseco piston. Glad he did.

I basically just had to replace the blown gasket, so I cleaned up everything real good, lubed the parts up and put it together. I hope she runs...I will be getting my HPD pipe/clutch kit next week. Thanks for all advice.

Glad to hear all my typing did some good. It is more work than you think when you are as slow a typist as I am.
Good luck with your engine.
