I'm thinking of buying a 500 Scrambler. Does anyone know the first year they put the High Output motor in it? Does the H.O. have alot more power than the standard 500? I would like to have a new one, but will probably end up buying one in the mid 1990's for a lower price. Or would I just be wasting my money by not buying an H.O.?

 

The Scrambler 500 was introduced in '97, however, they did not add the 500 H.O. until '98. GET THE H.O.!

 

I believe the first year for the H.O. was in the 2001 models and yes there is a noticeable difference between the H.O. and the non H.O.

98 to present have the same H.O. motor. In 2001, they made some minor carb and exhaust valve adjustments and gained minimal horse power gains. I drove a 2001 and didn't even notice a difference from my 2000. The big change was in the 98 model when they gained a lot more HP.

 

How much more horsepower does the H.O. have over the previous motor? The one I am thinking of buying is a 1997 and I was wondering if it was a wise idea. Or dou you think I should just hold out and buy a 1998 when I can afford one? If it's just 5 or so horsepower, I would think I could gain that by putting on a pipe and rejetting.
