Do you have a repair manual??? Lots of nice diagrams in mine...You can also get a parts manual off the polaris web sight but it does not have the same info as the repair manual...

Do you know why it won't shift now that its apart? Do you have everything installed in their proper locations? Tough to offer help in this case.

Man, this is tough to diagnose without seeing it.
A couple things pop into mind
The detent *****, where did they wind up? Do the shift arms move freely with the case split?
Are the forks oriented right? Sometimes they fit both ways, but only work one way. Not sure how they are for sure on the SP500...

Can you manually move the dogs within the tranny with the cover off the case?

Sorry I couldn't be more help. Wish I lived close by, it is one of those things where you really gotta see it to be able to fix it.

aright here is the problem. this is everything as if you were here to see if you could fix it
everything inside tranny is good. put gasket sealer around perimeter. then placed cover on. everything went on perfect tried to shift it , not shifting. took cover off, tried to shift it, shifts perfect. not a shifting problem when no cover on. put cover on without screws or holding and tried to shift will shift and psh cover out. it definitly have to be shift rods or forks. ok now i make sure the forks go into the cover perfect and everything. i even took the spring with the 2 metal pieces on the cover off to see if it will shift and still no shift when cover is on. this has to be an easy fix problem i just cant seem to find the problem. nothing is damaged or broken. the manual i read says put it in nuatral and put the cover on , i did that and still no shifting. please try to think of every possible tthing it could be and i will try it.
if you can help me with this info. please do so
thank you very much

When you shift it manually with the cover off, does anything besides the shifter fork move? That is, does it try to slide a shaft or something as you shift? Something may be hanging up, and instead of the dogs moving, it is trying to slide the whole shaft. Don't know what elst to say.

Sorry I can't be more help, but I never encountered this before, so I am down to just guessing.
