This is probably a stupid question for 99% of you guys but how do you know if you have a clutch kit? I just picked this 4 wheeler up at a dirt cheap price (1900)and I really don't know alot about the clutch-belt driven part of a Scrambler. Its a 97 scrambler 400 4x4. It has a Mikuni TMX 38mm carb - with a 280 jet, air box removed with a K&N air filter added, an HPd spark arrestor and I'm pretty sure it has an aftermarket pipe. So how do you know if it has been clutched? Color of Springs? I see that the driven has a red spring. DOes that tell me anything?

Can't speak for anyone else, but mine came stock with a Plain colored spring(No color to it, just a metal look). When I got my HPD Aggressive clutch kit for trail porting and piped, it came with a Red spring with Yellow stripes for the driven and a Violet secondary spring. As far as your quad though, the person before you could have changed just the primary spring to a red one and not changed anything else or he may have also added different wieghts also along with the driven spring and still not have changed the helix and the posibilities go on and on. Best bet if you really want to know is to take out the driven spring and check the weights to see what you have there and then pull the secondary apart (make a visual note of which holes the secondary spring is in, in both the sheave and helix) and check the helix to see what type it is. In all probability, it may already have a clutch kit installed, but if you have to know then I don't how else you can find out without some disassembly. Just a note: always make it a point to check the clutch buttons when you tear apart the secondary. I guess I couldn't answer your question, but maybe some else knows how to tell without taking it apart.
