sportsman tire upgrade
#1
I just lifted my 700, and I want to put on 27 or 28 inch tires. Does anyone know what size will fit my stock rims, and when I need spacers? I want to go as tall as I can, but I don't want to go too wide because one of the places I ride has gates at every road crossing (to keep cars out) and the gate opening is only (I think) 48 inches. I am quite certain that the rigs I've seen with spacers and super-wide Outlaw tires would not fit.
Thanks for the input.

If you want tall tires and don't want spacers, I would go with the 28-9-12 front and 28-11-12 rear 589 M/T. You should not need spacers and they will be skinnier the most other 28" tires. As far as those gates go, I believe they are 54" wide not 48". If they were 48, you would not make it through. My sp500 with 26" mudrunners is 52" and I just squeak threw the gates.

you know, I was wondering about that... someone told me it was 48". I measured my Scrambler a long time ago and it was 46". So my 700 has to be quite a bit wider. Thanks for pointing that out.
I am leaning towards the 589s. Which ones do you think, the ITP or the TItan? I'm trying to do this as cheap as I can, and get the most for the money. I would probably go with a 27, but I hate the thought of losing the extra inch. Does anyone know if the Gators are real wide like the outlaws? They look good, and way cheaper than the outlaw.
Thanks
Dan

I like the M/T over the ITP. The M/T have a rim guard for more protection. The Gator's ar 10" wide in the front, so you might be rubbing on the struts. My 9" wide MR don't miss the strut by much. So if you get the cheaper Gators then you buy spacers, you will paying about the same money as the 589's without spacers. Spacers are not cheap.

I'm not sure how wide the new Polaris wheels are, but I'd suggest a 7" wheel front and 8" rear. MINIMUM.
I have 27-9-12 front and 27-11-12 rear Titan 589's. The fronts are on a 7" wheel with the extra 1" being on the outset. On my stock wheels the sidewall rubbed the tie rod ends. Again the new SP may be different.
I went to an 8" rear, and IIRC, have 3" out and 5" in so I am only 50" wide or so. This keeps the tires tucked under my mud flares nicely.
