The dealers in my area are asking 300 to 400 more for the 03. Did they make any changes on the 03's? Was the only color available in 02 black and grey? And also is it true that the 700 will wheelie with out much effort

Hey-

I'm new to the forum - 02' 700 sportsman. -- Stock. Great machine with a few quirks (coolant leak). Wheelie's??? -- what the heck am I missing. I've ridden over 650 miles to date, and still can't wheelie - even in grass. I've even tried STANDING on the rear luggage rack (stupid). If you guys say this heavy monster will wheelie - tell me what I'm missing.

Oh - hopefully for the 03' they have fixed the coolant leak problem. It's a composite piece that is actually part of the water pump housing. I removed mine, cleaned it and applied RTV - for a temporary fix - seems to have worked. At the end of the season I'll put in a new "o" ring and flatten the cover piece. -- Dealer says this is the Polaris reccommended fix.

Other than above, the 700 is a great machine.

'03s are missing grease zerks on the chasis. This may save you some maintenance but cost you some bushings. You still have to grease the u-joints and front ball joints. '02s offered grey/black, yellow, & spruce green. '03 offers silver/black & camo green (ugly).

the '03 SP700 also comes in Blue and that looks FANTASTIC! (i saw it on the dealer's showroom last weekend.)
for the extra dough, go for the '03!
too many problems associated with the '02's......resale value may suffer.

plus, for me, the less maintenance the better- fewer zerks on '03 models......and the red suspension looks GREAT!

i say you go for the '03!

out for now,
-MT

Thanks for the replys I am leaning towards the 02 I do agree the red suspension in back looks pretty cool but Im not sure its worth the $300 I have mixed feelings on the greas zerks, Its not that big a deal to hit those zerks while your doing the rest of them. It seems like everytime I grease the bushings on my other quads there always full. The wheelie guestion was sort of a dream my 400 Xplorer will wheelie with out much trouble I know its a whole differnt machine. My 500 sportsman did do a wheelie in low gear right after I bought it and I have not been able to do it since. I think it might have something to do with the brand new belt at the time. I did read that the 650 Prairie will pull the front end up without any trouble.

first times out i would put it in low, hold the front brake, give it a little gas compress the suspension then let go of the brake and suspension. 45 degree+ wheelies all the time, for as long as i could balance. now with the muffler i can bring the wheels up about a foot to a foot and a half without pulling the bars in high. all i have to do is pull up a bit and it jumps right up.
