Sportsman 500 Wheel Seals
I just bought a used 2001 SP-500 HO. It seemed to be in pretty good condition. It only had 247 miles (48 hours) and paid $4300.00 for it. First is this a pretty good deal? Second, I noticed that the front left brake rotor had some fluid seapage on it and figure it is the wheel seal. Am I correct in my assumption and how hard is it to replace. The person also gave me a brand new Service Manual. What are some other things that I should check to make sure that I did not get screwed over. The motor cranks and runs smooth with no smoke and the tail pipe is dry. It also has a WARN 2000 lb winch.
Thanks for any and all help.

I am at Ft Gordon, GA which is not my home so I do not have any tools here with me. Since I will be getting home just two days before hunting season I have the local dealer here in Augusta looking at it for me. I will take care of all other maintenance myself when I get home. That is why I was wondering what else I should check. Thanks for the response. It seems that only certain people and or subjects get any type of response. By the way which GPS do you use. I use the Garmin E-Trex Vista with the Mapsource TOPO Software. Normally I just put it in the map pouch of the tank bag and works great.

The seals aren't that hard to replace, but you will need a torque wrench, a seal puller, and patience. The service manual should have the proper instructions on how to do it.
If it was me, if I were going to all the trouble of tearing it apart, I would also replace the seal wear sleeve. If it has a burr, groove, or rust spots on it, it will cause a new seal to leak prematurely. Just be sure to get it as close to flush with the magnet pole as possible.
