My bro has a 02 Scram 500...it has MAYBE 20hrs on it. Well on sat we went for a ride..we where gone about 10min and it was making a whinning noise...well after we got back home you could tell it was getting worse. The belt doesnt seem to be slipping, theres just a crazy loud whinning noise. The more throttle you give it, the worse it gets..and it doesnt do it when reved in nuetral.

So I was gonna take the cover off and check out the belt. Is this a straight removal process? Any gaskets im gonna have to replace? cause if so, i'll just wait till we take it into the dealer. Any ideas?

 

yes but it is easier if you take off the back plastic its simple to do just loosen the 3 nuts and screws on the footrail and the 2 in the middle were ur seat is then just do it on the other side and i think theres 6 or 7 screws holding the cover on just take them out and the clip at the end of your bike. U can still do it without the plastic off.

 

I can tell you from experience you most almost certainly need a belt. And also note the belt covers are notorious for warping from heat. Mine was rubbing the belt causing it wear prematurely.

This is caused from towing or jamming on the gas when you’re stuck. Avoid doing these things at all costs. You haven’t any low gear.

 

You dont even need to take the rear plastics off. Just take the 3 bolts off of the rear of the floorboard. This will give you plenty of room to slide the cover off. There is a air vent that goes to the top of the cover that is zip tied. You can slide the hose off and then undo the 7 screws and pull the cover off. There is a rubber gasket that you can re use if you are carefull taking the cover off. Inspect the belt for wear or seperation. You can get a belt much cheaper from Napa and the belt will be a better quality.Sounds like a small piece of the belt is seperating and hitting the cover. Thats where the whine would come from. The belt is real easy to change. It should not require a dealer if you have any mechanical experience. If you can change the oil in the 500 then you should be able to do the belt. Make sure everything is clean and grease free including your hands when installing the belt. You can use alcohol to clean the clutches.

 

I had a badly worn Dayco belt on my Scrambler that caused a lot of damage. I have a new belt cover and a clutch rebuild kit on the way. I already replaced the Dayco with a 700 belt. It's the best belt I've ever put on this machine. I doesn't ever slip and handles high torque real well (mudding, pulling). When buried in mud or starting a hard pull, I hit the throttle hard to get the wheels turning instantly. If you are giving it gas and the wheels are not turning, you are causing damage.
