Default how does this thing work

I have a 99 500 SP. The 4 wheel drive quit working and i'm just now getting around to trying to fix it. I was thinking that the front locked in at the front hubs, there's wires running to them. I was doing some other work on it and took the front hub apart and darn if I can see any locking device there. the front drive shaft turns all the time when its in gear and moving.
Help me out here how's this thing supposed to work and what do I need to be looking for.

Try turning on your ignition and activating the all wheel drive button ( engine not running and in gear) there should be a plate that is that will stick to the hub where the rollers are. If every thing is ok there then there is a sensor in the rear end that senses wheel slip sends power up the propshaft to front end. If everything checks out then look for mech things like the rollers in the front hubs. Hope this helps I am fairly new at this but have read a lot on these forums.
