dont really know much about that machine, but I was wondering, when you hold the start button and it runs, is the starter staying engaged? It sounds like a solenoid problem to me. shouldn't be hard to find and change. good luck
dont the kids ones have a tether kill switch? could be something in that circuit...

Clarify this for me, you are pressing the start button on the handle bar and the starter is NOT turning?! You should not need to use this button at all if you are kick starting the machine (it only operates the electric starter). Our SP90 starts all the time with a kick but rarely with the electric starter now that we've upped the piston/cylinder size.
As to your problem, I suspect the problem is in the on/off switch. It has three positions, (off, on, back to off) in that order left to right) and it may not be holding in the "on" position unless you hold it in place. If you're actually pressing the starter button and this works, I suspect something is seriously screwed up in your wiring (perhaps the starter button, which is a "momentary" type button is wired to your where your "run" switch should be wired to).
