Default SP 600 clunk or snap

I have an 04 Sportsman 600 and mine does the same thing. I was also told this is normal and agree with V8 that you can control this by easing into the throttle. Hammering the gas isnt good especially with a new machine. If that is when you hear the noise you will get used to taking off smoother with time. Can you tell a difference of how much "clunk" there is depending on the amount of throttle you start off with? By the way congrats! Truely an amazing machine!

I have a 2004 sp600 it does it to I was told it is the engine braking bushing disengaging. Just love the torque on the machine and every thing else.

Not much you can do to make it quieter.

Look at it this way, a Kenworth makes more noise than a Pinto, and that isn't always bad.

The noise won't go away, but it won't ever get much worse, either.

That noise is the driven clutch engaging. Due to the EBS the clutch engages (or rather has to work both directions) differently compared to a non-EBS clutch. The "clunk" was always there in the older models too, just not as noticeable. The 600 and 700 Sportsmans have more torque therefor have a little heavier clutch to compensate, and that makes the "clunk" louder. This is normal and Polaris has said they haven't had any trouble with the system.

Hard to explain without having the clutch out in front of us but the 600/700 clutch is a little heavier duty. The helix is what you hear "clunking" into forward or reverse. The distance it travels is farther on your 600/700. That's where you get the louder noise from. Next time you get the chance listen to a 500 H.O. It will clunk a little bit if done properly. Not as loud but it will. :-) If it gets worse then contact your dealer. Otherwise skip out of work and go have some fun!

Also, if you didn't have EBS in your older machine, you didn't hear the klunk, either. This was partly because the design of the spring tended to keep the helix 'tight', and there wasn't metal to metal contact, the helix slid on teflon-impregnated plastic 'buttons' instead of a hardened STEEL roller. The plastic deadened the noise like a rubber mallet is quieter than a steel hammer.

The noise is normal, and like mentioned above,it is the roller moving bach and forth in the helix.Polaris did shorten up the distance on 600/700 models between the helix cut(the back cut is closer and more vertical. This did help somewhat, but it is still annoying.the 600/700 models do it worse than a 500 model because there are crown and pinion gears ,as opposed to a chain case on a 500.These gears amplify the noise.
