Not sure what you mean by hot battery, that would indicate rapid charge or discharge.

If both lights and start button are on the LH handlebar switch, it would indicate either a broken wire between ignition switch and LH switch cluster, or the cluster faulty.

out in my shop this morning and I can get the motor to turn over by jumping across the solenoid. I have power coming from the battery but no volts on the other side when I push the start button
has no spark either
Im thinking the solenoid is bad
Headlights still won’t come on. Does it have to be running for those to work?

If the lights are AC then all bets are off, your fault could be anywhere. Though, if the ignition is AC, the plug should spark when the engine is spinning, as long as you did turn the ignition on first. Without seeing the bike, or a wiring diagram I can't help much.

To test the solenoid, check if power is getting to both thin wires that go to it when you have ignition on, brakes on, out of gear and are pressing the start button. I use a 12v incandescent test lamp for this, as a lamp tests for power, not just volts.
