Thanks for the heads up! The guy told me he did the axle bearings on one of them himself. I guess this is a problem with all of them. How do you know when they're going? If they do need replacing is it a major expense? I'll keep an eye/ear open for the problem. Thanks again.

 

Thanks for the reply! When I test ride the Mojaves when I go to pay for them, is there anything that I could look/ listen/ or feel for to forsee a topend problem? When I test drove them originally, I used low-end and mid-range. The guy said I could go down to his field and open it up but I didn't. Thanks.

 

Thanks for your input. I told the guy we would take them. I did not give him a deposit though, he said it wasn't neccessary. We'll pick them up within about a week and a half.

 

I wouldn't call them "Major" problems. More like annoyiances. The intake cams do go flat sometimes, not every bike though. Some run 4-ever w/o losing a cam. Also The intake valves sink into the seats , again not every bike but quite a few.

When/if you buy the quads I'd adjust the valves first thing. Then every 6 months and you should be ok. I think the flat cam deal starts with the intake valves sinking into the seats because every one I have seen that had a flat cam had the messed up valves too.

My cam does have some wear that can be seen. It seems to have stopped......so far anyway. I'm keeping an eye on my oil filter for major metal shavings and when it finally goes I'll rebuild it.

Something I have noticed that I don't understand. The bikes that get regular dino oil seem to not have cam problems. Those of us that run the hi-dollar synthetic oils have cam problems.

Mojaveman, You got a great buy on the mojaves. You shouldn't have problems getting parts for them. They are easy to work on to, get yourself a manual. I like the supertrapp on my mojave and the k&n with the stage 2 really woke her up. Just my .02 cents. Lt. Dan

Those will be good to start on but later on you will be moving up to the bigger ones.

 

I know mojaves I had 3 of them with the problems that you say they are having plan on putting Intake cams in them they are wiped out, 155 bucks for each the exhaust will be fine also remember the 1988 had soft valves you may need to do valve jobs on both as well the valves are 30 a piece and machine work $135, so in short you problaby are paying about what they are worth, if you know them much ask them if you can take the valve covers off and look at them if they aren't wipe get after it if they are make a better deal with them! Can't lose either way, any question PM and I can tell you details of things to look for.
