I've seen several people with the Trailtech and they like them. You can get billet mounts that either replace the handle bar mount or attach to the mount. They also make a version that has mounts for their lights.
As to why one would put one on, either he wants to know how fast he's going or gone. Wants to know how far he's ridden. The trailtechs also have a meter in them so you know use that to base when you do your maintenance. The trailtechs also have an option so you can set up two vehicles in them. So you can use it on two bikes, or possibly the same bike if you change tires. Say maybe with dirt tires and the other with dune tires.
I have a GPS (Garmin etrex Venture) and could use that as well. I just installed the mount last night. We'll see how well it does. It's just the plastic mount that Garmin sells. I figure I'll try that, it was an Xmas gift, before dropping $40 for a RAM Mount. Only problem is it's spotty up in the forest because of the tree cover.
The Trailtech goes for $75 at RockyMountain Trail Tech Computers at RockyMountain
THe clamp/protector is another $70-$80. Figure a couple hundred for the one with the lights.
