400ex vs. warrior
#21
We rode a tough ~100 mile desert trail ride this weekend (two EX's and a DS). As I was riding over the more technical sections, I thought back how in years past I had ridden the Warrior over the same trails. I can remember how tough it was to drag the (top) heavy Warrior through the nasty stuff. The EX just breezed right on through!! We blew away the dirt bikes (about 30 of them mostly on a variety of XR's and YZ's) on all the tough technical climbs. Their skinney tires would get them stuck and they would flop their bikes, while we just blew right on by. A lot of dirt bikers think of quads a the "wife's bike". Well, my friends wife showed them a thing or two!!

I had them opportunity to ride a Warrior some this weekend and I know I sure wouldn't want one of those things. I guess I am just to use to riding Honda's and my Z400. Which by the way is for sale. PM me if interested. I'm going to buy myself a new Prairie 650 and then pick up a Cannondale next spring since my son has started racing.

Hey Zookyridr, The "going" price is slightly higher than you indicate. (as suspected)
lowest price for used 99 400EX: $3500
Highest price for any year (probly 01') 400EX: $4500
Looks like every single person who buys one of these 400EX's listed in the Cycletrader in your area is "just plain stupid".

I've never heard of anyone always rebuilding a 400ex and I ride with 4 others besides mine as well as 2 z400's a DS650 a banshee a Cannondale 2 warriors and a Blaster. The 400ex engine is a fairly conservative engine that outside of being air cooled doesn't really get the stress of a higher reving higher output motor. Not super fast but definitely reliable.

id like to reply again that the 400 is better. the hondas can keep up with the pack at the "bull gap" hill climb, while the warriors are left in the dust. the 400's can almost keep up with the banshees and 250R's and the raptors and DS's but the warrior gets blasted away. i would go with the EX anyday

I have a Warrior and my riding buddy has a 400EX, and his girlfriend has a 300EX. All 3 machines are bone stock. In a drag race obviously the 400EX takes the checkered flag every run with any rider. But I got toasted on the 300EX while the owner (buddies G/F) was on my Warrior. Now I'm not bashing women riders becuase I know at least one who can ride better than me. But the girl in this case is brand new to the sport. And she still spanked me on the Warrior. Like pretty much everyone else has mentioned it depends on what kind of riding you may be doing. The Warrior does handle very well in the dunes, even with stock tires! Whew, but the EX out performs it undoubtedly.
P.S. If you're going to buy a brand new quad I'd definitly go with the new Z400 or KFX400. I think they are the same price range as the 400EX. If you have a little bit more money go with a Raptor!
Oh and by the way that's a sweet story YZGUY..... gotta love it.

mr350x, The ads in cycle trader are always inflated pricing and usually say OBO. I buy from individuals that I hear about from locals at my riding areas. One of the guy's I ride with just picked up a 99 for 2500.00. It needed a seat cover and the tires were worn but it already had a pipe, filter and lower geared sprocket and was in great shape other than tires and a cut in the seat. I can buy brand new for less than 5000.00 although I wouldn't buy a new 400EX.
