help with my shifter on my 87 lt230s quadsport
Jiffy,
You need to check two things to solve your problem. The first thing is to remove the shift lever and check to see if it is starting to or if it is already stripped. The lever is made of cheap metal so that when stripping does happen it will strip the lever first and not the rod. Secondly check the rod because it could have stripped. If its just the lever itself then just order a new one or go to a cycle dismantling place and ask to have a lever matched to the one you have, I did this for my Zilla. If it is the rod, hopefully its not, then you will have a lot of work to do beause it requires taking of the engine cover and then getting down and dirty with the inner workings to replace it. Check the service manual for your quad for the latter part.

He isn't having a problem with the splines on the shifter, or the shaft. He has a linkage style shifter. You have a few options. You can order a new linkage for $30 from www.vincescycle.com, or you can get a short shifter of the same splines and bolt it directly to the shift shaft. Or you can cut, and weld the old shifter.

On my quadsport all I did to fix the sloppy linkage was drill a hole in
the joints and pass a small bolt through put the nut on and rivet the
end just to make sure it dosent back out.It was ten times better and
I kept the bike five years after that and never had a problem after.
Also did the same thing on my friends queadsport and worked great.
hope this helps
