ok i have an 89 lt230E how do you adjust the clutch? the motor does not tick or knock. the smoke is blue(oil) smokes the same no matter what temp. and no to the starter pull. the motor still runs, but won't idle, need to adjust the idle, how do you do this?
so you are saying just replace the rings? and not the piston? i thought i should just get a weisco comploeat package for 70 bucks. i assume the motor will need to be retimed?

You adjust the clutch by removing the oil sight glass, and ajusting the valve style screw/nut.
::RIGHT OUT OF THE FACTORY MANUAL::
1. Drain engine oil.
2. Remove 3 bolts and take of clutch adjustment cap(sight glass)
3. Loosen the locknut.
4. First tighten the release screw(flat head) 1/2 turn, then back off until resistance is felt.
5. From that position, tighten the release screw from 0-1/8 turn, then tighten the locknut.
6. Install new gasket and clutch adjustment cap.
7. Refill with proper oil.
If you are willing to spend the cash I'd go ahead and do a complete top end. It will ensure a motor you wont have to take apart again. If it doesn't try and rip the starter out of your hand every few pulls its low on compression. You may want to consider a higher compression piston, or having the head shaved(milled)

i just really want to do it as low cost as possible since i only spent 500 bucks on the engine and bike. do you think i can go ahead and buy the weisco piston package? it's high comp. and i am going to have a friend mechanic check the valve seals and borrow a timing light from a german import bmw dealer i know, do you think the motor will stop smokeing if i get the piston and assc. done? and get the valve seals done?
nobody will answer my question and it's a good one, being there is a timing chain will i need to get it retimed????
