Break in theorys...
Just wondering how you guys broke in your quads and your opinions on break in methods. My theory is not to follow the manuals saying of only half throttle for the first ten hours of operation. You need to open up the motor to get a proper piston ring seal against the cylinder wall. Otherwise riding with not even a little strain on the motor will cause the cylinder wall to act just like a file and wear down the piston ring faster. Because when you punch it the oil pressure raises causing the piston ring to swell and get a proper fittment. Now I am not saying that you just beat the **** out of your new machine but you should load and unload the motor to get all the little gadjets and gizmos to seat. But anyway this is only if your going to ride the quad hard after break in, if your only going to just cruise around there is no need to do this. But make sure you let the motor cool at regular intervals after loading the motor. Well what do u guys think?

This is a subject where people really vary, in what they do.
Modern motors dont need much break in. Over the years, they have figured out the correct surface finish for the cylinder walls and rings, cams and followers. There is very little to break in.
I would do what it says in the manual, if they say to stay under 1/2 thottle for 10 hours, that doesnt sound unreasonable. I wouldnt let it idle for long. There isnt much for oil pressure at idle.
This is just my 2 cents, youre the one who paid for it, and will be paying for repairs, so if you want to do something else, go for it.

I agree with GTFZ250. And same for my 04 Subaru WRX (you can see a pic of it in the background of my 3rd pic in my gallery thing). And if we're talking about breakin in one of the quadsports... keeping it a 1/2 throttle for the 1st 10 hrs. of operation is just straight out impossiable! I tried for a minute on my 1st ride with my 03 Z400, but that didnt last long... didnt help I was with a friend on a YZ125 who all he wanted to do was race me on the street on the way home from the trails haha
But anyways, you should also bring it in for that 1st break in maintenance between 15 and 30 hours. It makes a noticable difference, or at least it did on my machine

Maverick87 I wouldnt change the oil in your wuad if all that you have is 4.2 hours on it. It comes with a special oil to break in the parts and if you change it to early it could shorten the life of the quad. At least that is what I have been told.
Dragfameson I love WRXS. THere is something about 4 wheel drive, turboed and intercooled cars that are fantastic. And 13 second quater mile times from the factory is crazy. The only car that ran any better in the quater mile from the factory was the '87 Turbo Regal or GNX. When you hear that whine of the turbo you cant help but
