There should be a T shaped mark on the cam gear. It has to allign with the head so the T is upside down. Youl have a flat line paralell with the head and one sticking up 90 degrees to the head.
If i had the manual id scan you a pic... but its in my toolbox at work. Sorry!

look AT THE CAM, there is a D if you flip the Dcounter clockwise 90 degrees, the motor needs to be a TDC(top dead center) you kinda need 2 people to do this, i am a timing pro, done it about 20 times on my 230 lol, damn that sucks.
i can scan the page outta the factory manuel if you need.

Ooopsy, for the engine to be at TDC, there is a small plug right near your magneto cover, remove it and roll the engine over until a T comes into view clearly, thats TDC. Sorry I forgot about that. Then do the other step I told you to do.

well what both if you guys said dosent apply because my cam dosent have a d or at on it it looks more like an e and this is an 86 230 quadsport and there is no plug to remove near the mag cover but the mag cover and flywheel are off anyway so its easy to find tdc do you have anymore ideas

Exactly what model is your bike? There are a lot of different 230's. The method I explained applies to a LT230e. Chain drive, auto clutch. Anything else and I'll have to get my manual from work. Sorry to confuse you.
