Just bought a 86' 250r, paid $1400. Noticed it is a case-reed engine (looks funny-im used to late mx bikes), but has FMF pipe/silencer, and fresh top end and jug. It has some slack around where swingarm mounts to frame on left side..can anyone give me an explanation (sorta like an exploded view) of what's supposed to be there? Looks to me like it's missing a spacer or somthing. Also anybody got any kind of recommendation as to what kind of service manual is best for this thing? Bike is strong, good back shock, front shocks..well..they ARE 14 years old so they have a right to suck. Overall bike is in great shape-just the swingarm worries me..

86QR,
Your best bet is to get a factory shop manual with some exploded veiws. Or take your qr to a dealer and have them look at it. I had a 86 qr years ago and it was a great bike for me, It does have spacers in it and should not have side to side movement in it but you will need the shop manual to find what is missing from yours. Don't forget to take apart and inspect all the bearing in the rear axle housing as well as the a-arms, the qr's do not have grease zerks and most squids are to lazy to take them apart and grease them. Hope this helps -- see ya in the woods

Just curious, but where are you from and where did you buy the bike from? Sounds similar to a bike a friend of mine sold just last year to someone. Probably not the same but you never know.

I'm from south MS. Worked on quad today, put new barnett clutch in, and tightened swingarm nut (had to put a new one on). Old nut was stripped out, so I think that's what the problem was. I'm going to tear this thing completely apart over the next few weeks and check everything out. If bucks allow, I'm gonna spring for a new swingarm.
thanks for help,
greg c.

I own an 85' QuadRacer. The play in the swingarm is very common problem. There is supposed to be 2 dust seals 1 needle bearing and 1 bushing on each side of the swingarm. I bought a shop manual at a dealer.....Well worth the money. My swingarm has cracked twice and I am replacing it with a later model one. I know the chain tightening system is a hassel, but they are much stronger on the later models. Anyway
call T.J. Parts Express for a swingarm bearing and seal kit.....$39 .....Dealer will want $52 for two bushings.....I would also get those from T.J.
