Default Was there ever a on/off switch for lights?

I have a 86 LT250r and i got mine about 2 years ago. I was wonderin if there was ever a on and off switch for the lights. Mine only has a High and Low switch, and there is 2 wires that i have to twist together every time I want the lights on.
