z400 6 months old, lost power and top end bogs????
This is my first four stroke? I have an 04' z400 and it has about 30 hrs on it, I have chaned the oil twice and cleaned the air filter three times. My girlfriend usually rides it, so I know it hasnt been riden that hard. I took it out last weekend and I noticed that it has lost a significant amount of power all around and the top end cuts out or bogs. I thought it could be the altitude but once I got home (apprx. sea level) the same thing was happening. It had been sitting with the same gas in it for a few weeks so I drained and replaced the gas, no difference. Before I take it in to the local dealer I have been trying to get some idea of what might have happened. If anyone has some input it would be much appreciated. I would like to get this straightened out before I put a pipe and start doing some slight mods.

Well, if there has been gas in it, you might want to check the carberator! The resivior might have some gunk in it or the jets might have gunk in them.
Is it an aftermarket air filter?
Maybe there is sand/dirt in the carberator causing the engine to bog. Take some carb cleaner and spray the heck out of it. I know it is kinda pain to do but if the gas is all drained just take it off and clean it.
I had a similar experience, runs great now that it is clean!

Yeah, actually it was when I bought that damn thing! I rode it around the dealer lot and it was perfect. Then I got it home rode it a little more and it was great. Then a couple of days later I hopped back on it and it was like back-firing and then sputtered. I was like oh no you did not just do that!! And then I was like crap it was not going at all! but I could jump it but it sounded like it was running top speed but going nowhere!
I took the dam thing apart and when I got to the carberator there was just a few fine speckles of black stuff that must have clogged the main jet. So, I sprayed the heck out of every hole in the carb and now it runs great!

But basically when it first brakes in, everything needs to be re-adjusted because the parts all loosen up..
All engine's are like that, with your car almost everything is adjusted by the onboard computer, but with an ATV, Dirtbike, scooter, etc.. that don't have an onboard computer montering the A/F mixture n' such you will have to adjust it your self...
You may want to take it to a dealer and have it serviced... You can also try a fuel aditive that will clean out your Carb when it runs threw with the fuel.
Hope that helps,
Chad

I guess the dealers out here are paying for the high priced facilities out here or something. They have all told me from $170-200. But I went to the dealer and talked to one of the tech's there (whom I know is good, and open with his knowledge) and he said it's prob. a carb problem also. so I will try to clean it out myself tonight and post tomarrow with the results.

It all sounds carb related. The service is for Tech related recalls/problems/and yes the occasional loose nuts and bolts.
Based on the description it is all carb related cause he says it "bogs" which is usually a fuel/power issue. And the fact that it starts and I am assuming it can idle, and only happens when it is going, carb.
