the transmission is messed up, my buddy had the same problem with his warrior and he got a whole new tranny, but really all you have to do is take it apart and see what's up with it, right now i'm having problems with my 250R transmission hitting neutral when you go up to 2nd instead of bypassing it, i also had the gear popping out problem on my 87 LT250R all i did was put some Bel Ray 2 Stroke transmission fluid in it and it hasn't did it since, but now a whole bunch of other things are going wrong

as long as the gears are fine you probly have a weak detent spring or a worn shift star you will need to split the cases though,
you could try some thicker gear oil to see if that makes a difference.

yes the shift star could be one of the most likely things....on my Mojave...it stopped it from staying in second...so i grinded it so it was little sharp points so goes into gear fasst and stays there

My lt250 did the same thing, the gear dogs on both second gears were rounded,if all the other gears work fine but that one i would guess that to be it.you can find 85/86 trannys on ebay all the time
