Well it all seems good and well now. Got bike on Monday, they did recall on the spot. Didn't receive any paperwork about it though, although there appears to be a white lithium-like grease residue on a portion of the top of the throttle housing. Only had bike out once and it's all I dreamed it is and more. Now I've got a big bike without an accursed automatic.

On yer wish list ya should consider at least moving up to the 26"ers.
What do ya mean "accursed automatic"? Once ya ride one and get used to it you'll never want a shifter again. I'll admit on the smaller cc machines the auto is not as desireable but once ya get to where the power is, the autos are great.

I'm just old school. I've owned over a dozen cars and only one was an automatic and that was a 73 Mach 1. Call me a control freak or w/e but I like being in total control. Another thing is the problems that belt drivers have reported after being in deep water, although the technology is getting bullet proof.
As far as tire size, the vinny is already as tall as I want it, it's the tallest bike I've ever ridden, and at this time 25's are where I want to be. I'll probably run the dunflops/flats for atleast this summer so maybe by the time I'm ready for new boots I'll go to 26's. Being in WV most of my riding is up and down hills so stability is more of a concern than a 1/2" of ground clearance.

actually i rode a auto for a few years, got a dirtbike, and my 400ex, and prefure it over the vinson some days, shifting is fun, i think some people who say shifting isnt good, just arent as familiar with a clutch, so they are weary of it. (coming from someone i know)
dont forget you might sit 1/2 inches higher BUT, the bike is also going to be 2-3 inches wider in the frount and rear, really helps with stability!
for example i have 26x12x12 rear 589s, and 26x10x12 frounts, stock is a 10" wide rear(it says) and frount is a 8" (so it says) by the time you inflate the dunflops, and measure them, i bet they arent more then 7" and 9, if that in the rear.
i measured the rear of my 589s and they are 12.4 inches side to side. so thats a substantial difference in width.
that 1/2 inch you have in clearance, you wont ever feel because how much better the bike handles because it is wider, and the tires dont roll in corners.

When you go to the 10" wide fronts, did you notice excessive steering effort required (at low speeds of course, anything will steer once it's rolling almost), also how much more mud do you eat? Those 8's on the front have already sent mud clods between my eyes a few times already.

With the mudlites ya get a deeper tread so if ya wear em down halfway ya still got 25"ers. The ride is better but the deeper lugs really are nice. They weigh bout the same as the dunflops but wear and ride way better.
On the shifter discussion, I agree there are times when shifting is part of the fun. I would never want an auto street bike. On a dirt bike an auto would be silly. But playing around on a quad an auto seems so .......................................automatic .
