I actually use both. While a bigger trailer would be ideal, I use the 4x8 trailer I do have and drive the quad onto the trailer and then up the ramps to the truck bed. (my ramps are also a bit short to get into the truckbed by themselves.) I've seen quite a few others do this as well. It aint pretty, but at least I can bring two quads at once! I'll second the making good use of safety straps and having a touch of momentum. Just remember, you don't want to use the cab of your truck to stop with though.

 

buy or make ramps that have rough expanded metal on the top of them the tires grab in really good so you don't have to worry about spinning or just get a trailer

 

Not everybody's quad weighs 296 Lbs dry.

 

I let my winch do the work. I ran a chain across my front two tie downs in my bed. I just leave it there all the time. Snap the hook on the chain and put the quad in neutral and it will pull it right up. Works well for me when I don't use the trailer.
