If it's just strictly speed you're after, buy a YFZ. You can make a Z run with them, but it will cost you more than a big bore kit. You'll need the big bore, porting, cams carburetor, and ignition reprogrammer to hang with the Yammy, you'll have over 2 grand into that setup.

The stock 450's are both under 40hp @ the wheels. To run with them you don't need to go big bore or spend 2K.

My mods look like this. Other Z's with similar mods (most without a carb, and with the cheap CDI) put out 38-40 hp

Advantage Cycle DRZ kit- $160 (12.2:1 CR)
Cams (HotCams or other)- $250 (mine were slightly used $150)
Full exhaust ~ $450 (my Rossier was $315)
CDI +1000 rpm - $85
Edelbrock- $320 (again, mine was slightly used $150)

That will net you high 30's. Running right with the 450's. I ride with a piped 450r and I pull him in the first 3 gears and he evens it out on top. I didn't quite reach the $2000 mark. I'm sure I'd be a lot more happy with a nice Dyna CDI, but for an extra $140, I'll take what I have.

There are also new pistons out from VCP called Hammerhedz. They're $260 a piece (12.5 or 14.1 stock bore, 14.1 for a 435cc) and they've proven on the dyno to provide 4-5hp over other aftermarket high compression slugs.

It that's not enough a Wiseco 440 kit can be put together for around $400 total. Or a nice Nikasil coated Athena 435 can be picked up, ready to drop right in, for around $615.

BTW, welcome from Ireland. Slainte.
