Who do you ride with? Get a bike if they have bikes, a quad if they have quads. I have tried riding quads/bikes together and it is no fun. What is hard for quads is easy for bikes, what is easy for quads is hard for bikes in my experience.

still no quad yet? I thought you were gonna stay away from the z400. Anyways between the 2 my brother would say a bike is more fun and I say a quad.

what type of terrain do you ride, like trails, track, mud, sand etc. for sand go w hte 400, the track its a toss up, mud is pretty fum for both quads and bike, i think 4 stroke would be better for mud, if you do like trails just go with what your friends got. rm are pretty fast, i dont know if theyre as fast as a 400 tho.

I think the yz is better. Have you thought about a 250F?

Both are fun...if you get a bike don't get the tiddler, get a 250F...any 250F. I had an 97 RM 125 and the power was anemic except for one split second WAY up in the rev range.

Why the 250f? Is a 125 2 stroke bad?

two strokes arent bad by any means but four strokes are just less work.... so if you are looking into dirtbikes then a 250f is the way to go. But as far as which is funner, a quad or dirtbike, then that is just up to you. Go ride both and figure it out for yourself. It is all personal preference.
