1989 LT250S Starts then Dies
#1
I went and cleaned out the carb and now the bike will start and then die immediately. If I wait a few seconds it will do the same. If I immediately try to kick it nothing happens except I wear my leg out.
Can someone send email me the carb break down from the Sukuki manual?

If it didn't have this problem before you cleaned the carb, it's not your valves. The problem has to be something in the carb or fuel delivery. It sounds like it could be your float. If the float is not letting enough fuel into the bowl, it could possibly start but not run long. Make sure the little tab at the top isn't bent too much not allowing the float to rise enough.
Another possible problem is your petcock and fuel filter. Check the fuel flow to the carb to make sure it's feeding the motor enough. When the petcock is open, it should flow a nice steady stream of gas to the carb. If it's dripping, that's the problem.

I am not sure what the deal is. I have torn the carb apart a few times and adjusted the float to Spec. The float does not have a hole in it. I am leaning towards the float needle hanging up on the jet. I have installed the carb without the bowl on and manually moved the float and it works like its supposed to but I dont know whats left to work on. I am going to dunk the carb in Carb Cleaner to see if I can get some residual gunk out of there and blow the hell out of all of the passages again but I am stumped.
As far as the valves go this thing has killer compression so I dont think it is the valves at all but I will look into that as well.

if it has good comp. then it probably isnt' the valves. check the choke to make sure it isn't getting stuck on, too. i think i might have an extra carb for our old one, i will check and see and if you can't get yours to work we will see if we can work out some kind of deal for it.

To theTank and everyone else,
Thanks a ton! Tank, couldn't have done it without your emails! I took apart the carb for the 5th time and just put it into boiling water for an hour. It must have finally gotten out the last of the crud in the carb passages. The bike runs good, idles and powers up good. I got the clutch deal fixed up as well. Someone must have taken off the cover and not aligned the rack and pinion for the pressure plate.
Now it just needs a ton of TLC, the unbending of the rear frame section and new fenders.

cool, sounds like you are going to have a lot of fun with that machine. I always had loads of fun with mine when I had it, then my brother had to go and blow up the motor. I ended up buying a new z400 two years later and love it more than ever.
