Also, I moved the needle clip to the richest setting and got the carb adjusted pretty decently in the short time I messed with it. It idles fine and revs fine before fully warmed up. But after I've been riding for a while, if I lightly hit the throttle from idle, it will stall. Other than that it has been running good. Still need to play with it some, though.
My LT230S is an 86 that was pretty lightly used. How much vibration is normal with these old machines? If I let the RPMs get real low, there is kind of a left to right shake/vibration in the front end. And at high RPMs I get a high pitch buzzy vibration. The vibrations are nothing too extreme, so I'm trying to figure out if its normal or there is something bent internally. All bearings are nice and solid and it doesn't seem like a drive line issue as I can make it buzz in neutral.
Since acquiring this quad a couple weeks ago, I have rebuilt the front calipers/master cylinder, rebuilt carb, put in new EBC clutch with new OEM drive plates, new sprockets and chain, adjusted valve lash, replaced decomp cable, new EBC front pads, new levers, new grips, new K&N air filter and some other general maintenance.
In the mail I have new Maier white plastics, black Maier hood, PRM front and rear grabs, 20" Kenda Claws with new sprockets (13/39), Pro-Taper bars, and a custom seat cover. I've gone a little overboard, but it's been fun. I'll be sure to post pics after shes all new looking and pretty.
Find TDC with a screwdriver thru the spark plug hole. Put tranny in 5th gear and turn the sprocket with your fingers.
Vibrations:
Vince told me the crank gets twisted on the rod bearing when the back wheels come off the ground and hit again while the piston is on the power stroke. That's why guys weld the bearings. If you notice a lot of vibration, that could be it.

There should be a sticky about the hazards of KN filters. If you have one, you WILL destroy the intake valve... Its only a matter of time. Whether it be from KN being crap right out of the box or from paper deteriorating over time or from the act of cleaning the fragile paper element, idk, but every engine I've seen with a KN filter need a new valve pretty soon. If you're gonna run KN, you may as well stretch some panty hose over a cv stack instead. IMO.
Uni makes a wrap to go over them so that it actually filters the air.

Yeah, to be safe I went ahead and ordered a Uni.
I've never ridden another LT230. Is there little to no vibration during normal operation with them? I assume there's basically no way to know whether the vibration issue is the crank or not? Short of pulling it out and swapping it with a known good one anyway. I was hoping not to go that deep in to the engine.

Any single cylinder is going to have some vibration. My original 230 vibrated so bad that the frame mount bolts either came out or the holes egg-shaped. Its tough to say what's normal. If its bad enough that you're asking about it, it might be a crank issue.
I think the 230 does vibrate more than most singles because its stroke is longer. But it wouldn't seem like a brand new machine off the showroom floor would have the levers jumping around n that.... though I haven't checked that theory.

I have heard of this problem, hasn't happened to me n I dont really jump my quads just ride them hard n climb hills in the sand pit, but a friend of mine flipped his n it broke the stem maybe it was weak like u r saying.Do u think its the welds? I'll check mine r they breaking at the top or bottom of the stem?
