Just don't show her any Quicksand videos and you'll be fine. Glamis has some of the best dunes that I've ever had the pleasure of riding. AND....the kids quads can tackle most of the smaller dunes out there. Let me put it this way, my buddy that just bought his daughter a LTZ50 wasn't even into riding until he went to Glamis. Now he has a toyhauler and a quad for each family member. I'm just saying.....

No not that kind of quicksand......but I like the way you think. They are "documentaries" of the sand dunes. Basically a girls gone wild meets Country Fried videos but all based in the dunes.

I need help! I bought a 2006 LTZ50 for my son. It was fine for a day, now the starter justs "whirls". Do I need to buy the whole starter or could it be just the armature? Where could I get the best price to order a new starter?
I tried to start it with the rope and the rope broke! My son's dusgusted!

I took the recoil out and it was disintegrated. Could that effect the electric starter?
It was pretty well locked up. The washer and nut came off the starter cup which is why it disintegrated. Now I wonder why it fell apart and if I got took when I bought it. It looks almost new.

You most likely will need the whole assembly. You can check with the micro fiche online and see for sure. Sounds like the previous owner did a little tinkering without really knowing how. It sounds to me as if the previous owner at one time took apart the clutch cover for whatever reason and never tightened down the nut when he/she were done. With the pull start not secure it could unwind in the clutch housing and tangle up with the belt, clutch, gears or anything that is spinning. This could then interfere with the starter gear by engaging it and either burning up the motor or stripping out the teeth on the starter gear. For you sake I hope you got it for a good price cause OEM replacement parts aren't cheap.

Lowlife,
Thanks for your reply. I ordered a new starter ($200) and a new recoil ($100) from the dealer. Also the starter gear(?) that the pinion engages of course fell off because the nut and washer were off. Now my question: when I push the starter gear on, or whatever the big sprocket behind the recoil cup is called, it seems the belt is too wide to allow the gear to push all the way onto the splined shaft.
Is there some trick to that or do I just put the nut and washer on the cup and torque it down? I don't see anyway (or room) to stretch the belt out until I get the starter gear (behind the recoil starter cup)on.

I checked the pinion gear, I turn it a 1/2 turn and the gear extends out like it should when the starter turns and the gear engages the starter gear (sprocket?). I assume then it is good, right? I hate to put on the new starter, and new recoil in, bolt the cover back on and then find it still does not work right.
Also I don't see any way to adjust starter to pinion to starter gear clearance. I appears they bolt on and that's it. I think maybe the former owner might have replaced the belt. It looks new. I'm thinking I could install the new starter, and the pinion put the cover back on to insure the starter does make the pinion extend out, just to check everything is working.
Also I had planned on taking three rollers out of the clutch. Now I can see a large spring behind the clutch. Since my luck sucks so far, I'm hesitant to take the clutch off and find the spring flys off and I won't be able to get the thing back together. Is there a lot of pressure on the spring? In the hundreds of posts about speeding up the LTZ50, I didn't see any comments regarding that.

EdKatt,
Were you replying to me when you said the rollers are on the engine side?
So they actually are not on the side with the recoil? I thought that was the clutch where the belt is. Believe it or not I've owned over 100 vehicles in my life, and can tear them down to pieces and put them back together again. But I've never been inside an ATV (this LTZ50 is our first) or motorcycle. I wish someone could put a photo online of the clutch assy. Thank you!
