Default running lean

i recelently bought a suzuki lt230s when i rode it when i first got it i noticed a slight backfiring the next day i went out for a ride and thier were holes in the pipe
the back firing stoped but on the last ride the pipe fell compleatley off and it has started backfiring agin

i was just wondering if that was because of the lack of pipe or was it caused by running lean

thanks,zz8t

Backfiring is usually lean pilot.

First ride: Too much backpressure = lean pilot = backfire when you let off the gas.
2nd ride: Drain bolts fell out the bottom of the muffler and backpressure went down = richen up some = no more backfire
3rd ride: pipe fell off completely = less backpressure, but less scavenge at low rpm which is about the same as too much backpressure = lean pilot = backfiring when you let off gas.

Put the pipe back on and remove the drain bolts and have fun!
