i just bought a 86 230s, the guy bought it from someone who most have put a pipe on it, but he didnt know if the guy jetted it, if you start the quad and rev the gas it will back fire alittle bit, how can i tell if it was jetted or if i need to jet it, is it hard and how to jet the carb the right way????

take it out on a trail when its warm and run two or three gears at full throttle, pull clutch and hit kill switch and hold clutch till u stop. Then pull the plug and see what color it is. If white u need to go with a bigger main jet. on my 230 with stock bore stock cam and a pipe i was using a 125-130 main jet and a 25 piolet with the d.g pipe

Sounds like the pilot is lean. Revving and then letting off followed by a backfire means lean pilot. Revving out and having it break up or backfire without letting off the gas means lean main or needle.

I was thinking the same thing. Try going a little bigger on the pilot and see if that solves the problem. Another quick and dirty test is to see if it runs/idles better once it is warmed up with the choke on. If yes then your pilot is to small.
