Is all of the shifter linkage still connected? Maybe try adjusting the linkage. Does it not shift with the bike running, while moving, we need a tad more info.

I am having the same issue with my 2004 Suzuki Eiger 4x4. Won't shift out of second gear with it running or not, moving or not.

Check the Hi/Lo/reverse lever hasn't got fouled up, and the link from pedal to gearbox, but I would guess at a selector mechanism problem inside the gearboxes, very complex, and the 5 speed is in the clutch side, and the hi/lo reverse in the alternator side, but both are linked.
