They come from the factory all Corked up to meet EPA standards. All you need to do to wake up a sleeping gaint is pop off the airbox lid for more air, rejett the carb with a 160 main jet, 25 pilot jet. then add a slip on Exhaust and then look out!!! Heres a link to asite just for your Z.http://www.z400central.com/invision/
I would also replace the stock airfilter with a Prodesign system. It much more secure than stock. I also run a Outwears lid cover in place of the stock lid. It let s air flow like no lid at all but repels mud and water off. The Z is my favorite quad!

Suspension that is sprung/valved for your weight, riding type, and machine setup will help you go faster in the corners, harder through the whoops, etc. A machine like the Z has enough motor that most riders are held back by stock suspension in that type of situation. Still, modifying the big 3 (i.e. exhaust, intake, and rejet the carb) will wake the motor up quite a bit.

I am not saying you are wrong by any means, but please explain to me how suspension makes you go faster. Or did you mean it is a pre-requisite for speed to get better suspension? Safety being the issue? Please explain.</end quote></div>
Scooter said it well. And it is safer.
The stock shocks are set up for riders from 100 to 300 pounds (so to speak) thus the ride will be harsh and the quad uncontrolable in rough terrain and trying to go fast.
A pre-requisite? I think so.
I also believe that the stock machine is faster than the rider. Once suspended, the rider can learn to be as fast as the quad. Then motor work "may" be needed.
I agree on the pipe, filter, and jetting.
I'd get a Sparks or Yoshimura pipe.

One thing I have noticed, the most popular route is to massage the engine, and chassis/suspension comes much later, if at all. But for those that have ridden machines with a setup suspension, they make those mods a much larger priority on future machines.
