I would pull some of the plastic off the side and try to trace where the shift cable runs down to. It might be the cable broke, it has something hung up on it or is there an adjustment on it somewhere.

well in case this happens to anyone else here is what i found.
deerhawk you were basically right. i followed the cable and it had come disconnected where it attaches to the transmission. it was kind of hard to trace it back without a extra set of eyes, i felt pretty stupid when i found it as it was basically right in front of me . apparently the C-clip that holds it on broke off. took about two minutes to fix after i found it. shove the linkage back on and put a new clip on and rode off into the sunset. hope this will help someone. thanks

Hey, I have a question. I have an 06 and the problem I am having is it is extremely hard to shift through(I have an auto, not a manual) the gears and when I actually get it shifted, it jumps into gear. Anyone have any ideas on what it could be? Also, please let me know how I can post my own questions, I can't seem to figure that out. Thanks and God bless!! Hebrews 4:12-13

you might want to check it with the belt cover off to see if the plates are spreading properly while reving up in neutral. if not might be the one way clutch bearing not functioning properly, or maybe... I don't know about this one havent' had to tackle that problem alignment of trans gears?? keep up posted good luck

First you might want to start your own thread. It does sounds like the idle is a little high. I would adjust it down first.
Here is a good way to test cable and shifter. Disconnect cable at Transmission. See if the shifter moves easily and smooth through all gears. If it seems good then manal shift it at transmission with it running-- brake 'ON' of corse. If it shifts good at tramission then you should look at the adjustment on the cable at shifter.
