suzuki ltf500f problems

It sounds a lot like it has got a bit of water in it. One of our "crew" has a 99 and after too many water crossings it backfired constantly when starting, running, or idling. couldn't give it any fuel or anything. We took it to Suzuki and they ended up rebuilding the carb on it. Of course he swore it had never seen water or even driven past a water hole!! But, what happens is when you get into a bit of water, there are a couple little vent lines on top of the carb and they take on water very easily. I remedied this problem early on by adding some automotive vacuum lines and running them way up through the frame to the handlebars up by the brake cables. You can then cap them off with some GM type axle vent caps by adapting some larger fuel line or hose. It really is very easy and will save you a very long walk home. This works even if the air intake on your machine isn't "snorkeled", because sometimes in a crossing situation your airbox can take on a bit of water without drowning out the machine. Then the airbox drain tubes do their job and you keep on running.
