Question lt230s unique problem lighting coil or regulator?

i have a 1985 lt230s quadsport. runs great. had no lights for years. popped in a new bulb in the taillight and it was bright. revved it up and blew the light. I replaced the regulator with one i had. it was a cheap one wire regulator i was going to use on a skidoo but didnt. now it is at a consant 14.5 volts. Now the problem. i hook up another light. weather it was 45 watt headlight or another 5 watt bulb for the tail light and both lights go way dimm. i have to rev it way high to get any decent light output. the lighting coil was new 2 years ago when i did the ingnition and pickup coils during a complete motor rebuild. So could it be the wrong regulator? i dont think the regulator limits the wattage. does it? or did my lighting coil take a dump? thanks for any help....mike

there should be nothing wrong with your lighting coil. the tail light should only be a 5w and the headlight should only be a 45 watt. with the suzuki regulator it should be just barely above 12v. the regulator may limit wattage. you should only have to have it slightly above idle to get a good light burn
