It is not uncommon for high lift cams to have a lumpy/irregular idle.

Yeah I think your right I may not be able to get it to idle at a normal idle-rpm.
How do I tell if its running lean on the top end?

It also has a UNI filter(no air box) and a muffler with very little restriction.
Have been reading other threads but still not sure how to tell if its lean on the top end.

well i run a 32mm mikuni roundslide vm, and while it offers insane, mild 400cc bike-wasting-performance, it WILL NOT IDLE SMOOTHLY. and ive done tons of tuning. it idles, just not very smoothly. stock cam by the way, but otherwise the motor is BUILT.

id say, if youve gone as far as installing a performance cam, boring .060 over, and exhaust, its about time to beef up the carburation department. in stock form, the oem unit is bareley enough in my opinion. id look for a 30mm tm flatslide or vm roundslide. you should be able to get a 30mm to idle with some tuning, and you'll see great performance gains over your stock anemic 26mm unit.

Thanks again LT230sman! Found that the 230 Vault is great for carb tuning tips and theory.
I think I'm gonna try a bigger main jet first but I think your right-I probably need a bigger carb.

Installing a cam is not hard at all, and will give you increased performance through the powerband, depending on lift and duration. Some cams are designed for top end, others low to mid range power, depedngin on your application. The cheapest and probably best option would be a cam from a 250s. It's a factory Suzuki part, is relatively cheap in comparison to aftermarket cams, and offers a boost in overall performance.

i was looking into this used 1986 lt230 it says that the stator plate leaks and that the throtle cable is broken. i am going to guess that the throttle is easy to fix. but how about that stator plate?? not even sure what tht is.
