I was trying to tighten up the head nuts on the cylinder and *SNAP*.... I broke the damn bolt stud that goes through the cylinder... I actually think I broke two of them.. why were they so easy to break?????

Can someone help me with this? How hard is it going to be for me to replace the studs and what do I need to order (gasket, etc...)? How far am I going to need to break this down?

 

You will need to take the head and cylinder off.. hopefully part of the stud is sticking out of the cases and you can grab a hold of it with a pair of pliers.. If it broke off at the cases its a lot tougher to remove.


Head and cylinder bolts are 1 of the very few things I use a Torque wrench on.. buy one before you try again...

 

Wow... we are getting down and dirty now huh... I am such a dumbass...

Okay shopping list

4 bold studs (I might as well replace them all)
Cylinder Gasket
4 nuts
Cylinder Head Gasket
Torque Wrench
Spark plug socket (What size?)

Can you give me some tips on how not to screw this up? Am I going to need to remove the piston and all that jazz?

I'm fixing to take this thing to a real mechanic...

 

You'll need to remove the cylinder to get to the broke studs. Hopefully there is enough of the broke stud sticking out to grab ahold of.
You'll need base and head gaskets and 4 new studs.
Maybe you were not tightening equally? I donno..I sponsored a kid and his dad could break em like toothpicks. For some reason, I don't have any problems in that area.

Don't feel to bad.. its how you learn..I could tell you how many bolts Ive broken off in my life time but Ive lost count.

Thats a real bummer.

Id suggest you buy a shop manual for a LT80.. I have one for all my toys except the Chinese stuff..

and buy a cheap torque wrench.

Just for a reference... 100 inch pounds is about the amount of force you would get if you tightened a bolt with a 6" crescent wrench.. And only pulled on the wrench with your pinky.. Im guessing you used a bigger wrench and used your whole hand.. and maybe your arm..
