Question shifting problems with my suziki eiger 400 4X4

I have a Suzuki Eiger 400 4X4 that will not shift while running. I have to shut it off for it to go from reverse back to neutral. Then I can start it & it with go to high or low but it will not go back to neutral or to reverse. I have to shut it off & put it back in neutral, crank it up & it will go in reverse. When it is not running I can push in the clutch brake & it will go from reverse to high or low just fine. But when its running it will not do it. I understand a little about how they work but if someone has any ideas about what the problem is my daddy will probably understand it. But I need some help if someone has any ideas. I don't know if it is clutch problems, or does the linkage on the transmission need adjusting. But if it is something simply maybe my daddy & I can fix it, I know if I take it to a shop they will charge me a arm & a leg & no telling what they will say is wrong, if it is anything like service dept. for vehicles. It runs wonderful otherwise. Thank you for your help.

Which model do you have? standard shift with auto clutch? or an fully automatic belt drive?

Is the idle speed set right? if that is OK, try taking the cable off at the lever into the gearbox (above the filler plug) and see if the cable position lines up with the lever, if it doesn't, adjust the cable.

The auto has a similar centrifugal clutch with a one way clutch/bearing as the manual version. All I can think of is this is sticking for some reason. Almost every utility Quad has one of these, and I have never known one to stick, but I guess it is possible for a spring to break and let a clutch shoe drag, or the one way clutch seize. If you remove the belt, and turn the front pulley, it should spin freely on the crankshaft one way and stick the other way, if it doesn't turn freely one way, take the pulleys and belt box off, and inspect those clutches.
