85 LT250EF No Spark
Hey guys. Tried everything I can think of on this machine. Replaced CDI, ing coil, pulse coil, lots of wiring connectors, battery, still no spark. Checked all the switches and wires. All wires seem to be ok. I have a factory repair manual and all ohms test seem to be fine. Here’s my question… The rotor that spins around the stator has a small metal strip on the outside, (about .5” wide, 1.5” and 1/8th thick). Is that strip supposed to be a permanent magnet? I think it passes the pulsar coil to send the signal to the CDI. I can place a paper clip on it and there’s no magnetism. If I move a magnet past the pulse coil, I get a small voltage reading. Trying to figure it out. Thanks for your help.

Sometimes when you introduce yourself to a Forum before asking for info you get a better response. Just my opinion! I would think you would get magnetism all the way around. I too have the same Quad and its a dinosaur, meaning alot of people dont have much info on them. Welcome to the Forum!

Good luck with this! I spent MONTHS on my 88 LT-4WD that had no spark. The problem with tracing my problem was the fact that sometimes it would start! I spent tons replacing parts and nothing worked. Finally, I found that one of the connectors had a broken wire in it. (The connection between the stator and the main wiring harness) I cut the connector completely out and soldered the wires back together. Haven't had a problem in 3 years now. :-) Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply. I'm kinda new to forums. Thanks for the welcome BruceDeuce. I have a mile or two on me (gray hair) but over the years have worked on lots of different machines, bikes, scooters, cars, tractors, gas engines, 2 and 4 cycle, diesel engines and the like and can usually figure out a problem though it may take me awhile. This atv has had me scratching my head for a few months. My 1st atv to work on. I kinda understand the cdi system. I have checked for continuity and the stator checks out good. I get voltage out of it to the regulator and the cdi box. Just cant figure what causes the pulse coil to send a voltage signal to the cdi box. I think it's the small metalic pad on the rotor. Can't read anywhere it states if it's supposed to be a perminent magnet or if it is excited by the stator when the motor spins over. Thanks for your help

Be sure to check the main harness connector in the headlight bucket, I think its yellow? These are notorious for corroded connectors that just break off in the plug, but look good on the outside. There is a kill circuit that can shut down the CDI if it gets a signal all they way thru neutral relay and kill switch and or key switch. Unit will start w/o battery as long as the kill circuit is open, I think it is an orange wire, but if you have a wiring diagram you can follow back from the CDI to the kill switches. I think there is a Y/B that will also kill the CDI if it has a complete circuit, it comes from handlebar switch and key switch, both run thru main harness connector.
