I have searched a LOT of places and have not seen this issue yet. I bought an lt80. had do some work on it and got it running. My problem is it is difficult to start as seems to be a common issue. But here is where mine differs, I only get spark for a split second just when you press the start button and when leaving off the button. If you quickly press it I can get it to start and run fine. Cleaned stator and checked ohms @ 231. Runs great but hard to start??? This has me so frustrated its the first time I have ever joined a forum and posted!

 

There are two totally different ignition systems used on LT80s. Early ones had a magneto coil in the flywheel with a wire going from it to the coil, and the HT lead from the coil to the plug. This coil contained the CDI. A kill wire was connected to the wire going from the magneto to the coil, when earthed it killed the spark. Note that the battery has nothing to do with this ignition circuit so low battery, bad connections in the battery circuit etc, can’t have anything to do with it. If you have the early type I would check the wire between the two coils and the earth on the Coil/CDI, if they are OK try a new coil/unit.

Late LT80s had a conventional separate CDI box and conventional wiring. I have had a few Hondas with the same problem and never cured them, the owners just got used to blipping the start button in short bursts until it catches.

I'd check the frame to motor ground. It should be on the top right fan cover bolt.

 

The machine is an 94'. I cleaned up all the grounds I can find and everything seems to be good in that department. I spoke with a local suzuki shop they said to check foot brake switch but not sure on results. I know it doesn't matter on this machine if it is engaged really. When I unhook it the starter does not even turn over so I'm guessing it is stuck in the engaged position. Would the CDI box interfere with the spark only on start time but be ok when running? can I check it with a meter?

 

Ok new update, for some reason I have nothing on either connector of the stator, I have no issues with foot brake switch, I have 3 ohms between the coil inputs,16.5 ohms from input to plug cap. Looking for info on testing the CDI. Also looking for a place to buy a CDI if needed.

 

Stator: ohm between the ground and red/black wire. Should be 179 or so.

 

Well I order a new stator online from ricky stator and it starts like a champ. Thanks for the help guys!
