I got the old LT230 running great again! I put about an hour on it after the valve job and new piston/ring set up. No problems. Took it easy. Does new piston/rings need break in time? I also put on the K&N w/outerwear on after I was sure all was ok, no air box mods. It seems to have a little more snap and power with K&N. Rejet? To get a plug reading should I do it like a car engine, wind it up -shut 'er down, coast back and read, or is there a better way for quad engines? I don't want to pipe it, too much noise and hassle, and it sounds great with stock pipe anyways. Just want to get the most out of the K&N, it's a good looking set-up. What do you think, oh great Yoda of the quad world. Thanks. I just got a Z400 today! I like it a lot I had a Raptor the Z400 handle a lot better. Although the Z400 seems to sit a little high it does not feel tepee at all(I ajusted the back sock as fare dowe as it would go this made it sit a lot lower). I only have 1 hr on it but I am very impressed. I think with a jet kit and pipe it will very close to the Raptor. You have to realize that is not a 660 it is a 400. Most of my riding is done in the wood I race a lot of Hare scrambles, Hope this is helpful.

What the he!l are you talkin about?
This has nothing to do with his question.

YES, new piston and rings need break in.
A million different people will tell you a million different break in
procedures. Id just take it nice and easy for the first 2-3 tanks of gas.

Some say break it in how your gonna ride it,like if your gonna put put it around, break it in put putting it around,if your gonna ride hard break it in rideing hard. ME says first go riding at 1/2 throttle and after about 30 minutes of that, let the engine cool. Then go riding again at 3/4 throttle, repeat. Then after a day or two of doing that, really open it up in the dunes. Do this maybe the 4th day if you wanna be careful. After all that change the oil clean filter ect ect.
THERE YA GO!!!!

LOL.....I think Warrior1 is just excited about his new ride.....as he should be.

bobcatv8,

Glad to hear that you got her up and running again.

Like Mr350X said, there are hundreds of different break-in procedures out there and everyone has their own opinion about what works best. The Manufacturers recommendations are usually a little over board, but they have to do that for liability reasons ofcourse.

I would run the first tank of gas at different riding levels. Don't put around all the time, but don't rev it to the moon more than a few seconds at a time.

On the second tank, just be cautious about wide open runs. keep them at a minimum but otherwise ride as you would normally. After this tank, run it like you prefer.

You do a plug check pretty much as you describe. No different from an automobile. Same principles apply. You don't neccessarily HAVE to re-jet when doing a single modification to a fourstroke engine. Only the running condition and plug condition will tell you if you need to. An airfilter alone with the stock airbox usually doesn't require a change. Neither does a pipe alone......but a filter AND a pipe always will regardless of the model or engine type.

Again,..Glad to hear you got it up and going. Keep us posted on your progress.
