Stuck floats in the carb can cause this to happen to the first bike. It sits for a while (bowl fills up slowly) and runs till the bowl is empty. Dirt in the tank can cause this. I just had to remove my tank, carb, and all hardware in Glamis to fix this exact problem. Pull the bowl off the bottom of the carb and see if there is dirt in there. if so., start cleaning.
Backfire etc.. Similar deal happened to me one day while riding.. Pinched vent line was causing this to happen. DOH!

The dealer shouldn't really matter. When I bought my Mojave new after about 2 weeks fuel started running out the carb overflow. I bought the thing 2 hours away because the local dealer didn't have any. I called the local dealer and they more or less said "you should really take it to the dealer you bought, it could just be something needs adjusted, since they made the money on the sale, they should fix it. If you bring it to us and Kawasaki doesn't decide to cover the problem you'll have to pay $35 an hour". So i drove 2 hours they fixed it. Seems some of the plastic from the tank(where the mold comes together) got into the carb and caused the float to stick. 4 days later same thing. I took it to the local dealer figuring it was the same thing. They called Kaw told them my story and Kaw said to fix. In your friends case, I would definately take it to a dealer. While you may be able to get it running better, the probalem could occur again after their warranty runs out. Besides I know if I buy something new, I shouldn't have to work on it while it's under warranty.
