TOM: Yup, you Honda motor does look a bit abnormal. What the heck is it?

TOM: I will probably do something like a Trinity stage III or MX/TT kit.

DG: I have a CT kit in mine with .140 overbore and stage 1 porting and have been happy with their work. Hey what year did you say yours was again? if you have a 1987 model you would be wise to get the bigger studs put in it and LRD makes a bronze bushing for the crank that I would also recommend getting.... LRD also does excellent work from what I have heard...

TOM: I went ahead and bought it because that would have been a good deal even if the motor was not there at all. My original plan was to save my $ for another year and buy a running one. But even if there is a major problem, this one should be running for a lot less than buying one already running. Also, it will be more fun to rebuild it myself.

DG: NO JOKE!!! $500 was a great deal! I gave $1600 for mine not running...

Mine is an 87, but the top end is from a later model. I am hoping that whoever upgraded the top end also had bushings put in. I called LRD from what they told me it seems that they are very thorough and I’ve not heard anything bad about them, but they are very expensive. If I had a large budget I would probably go through LRD but Trinity seems like they can give me a lot more HP per $$. I have not talked to anyone else yet.
I’m only going to send in the top end. I will get it running and see if it shifts into all gears correctly and if the crankshaft has play before I start tearing everything down. If its in good shape I’m not splitting the cases, if its not I would much rather do so myself and have any necessary machine work done locally.
Seems that most of the complaints I’ve heard from people sending their motors away to have work done is that they had trouble getting them back. I think a lot of the companies get a hold of their motors and want to replace every thing with any wear whatsoever and charge them a ton of extra $s. If I only send in the top end, it would mostly eliminate that possibility and worst case scenario it would be much cheaper to replace than the whole motor.

I didn’t think about rider weight in my original post. I am 6'1 and only 2-3lbs lighter than Huedog and Lt250R90RdR both put together. That may be part the reason for my lower top end speed. In fact, now that I think about it rider weight may be why the Quad has the smaller tires in the first place. The guy I bought it from (he put those tires on it) was several inches taller and considerably heavier set and me. I am sure he was well past the rider weight limit (265lb in 86). The upside to being big though, is that I could lose 50lbs and gain a free performance mod. Too bad double quarter pounders taste so much better than Subway chicken sandwiches.
