Read your manual. It is OK to tow in OD. The only time you need to lock out OD is if the tranny does alot of shifting in and out of OD. That is what burns them up. I would double check to see if you have a external tranny cooler. Just follow the cooler lines from the tranny towards the front. They should go into the radiator and then into a smaller cooler. If not, then I would install an aftermarket cooler.

If the truck isn't lugging along the highway, it's okay to throw it in OD for a while. just shift it back to drive going up hills and such.
